Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a speaking event organizer. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit website that focuses on the representation of women in pop stories of culture - was created and is directed by Sarkeesian. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular culture. Additionally she has a mission to increase awareness of online harassment directed at women and those who are marginalized. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Apart from being a well-known public speaker, she's given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was concerned about issues related to gender and rights for women from a young age. In 2009, the determined young lady was harassed by the Internet for starting a web featuring a series about gender and videogames. It was not enough to stop her. It actually made her more committed to be a feminist as well as media critic. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feministism, she's awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and is the founder of Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations within the popular culture stories.
